Roosevelt's Diner & Bar

Dinner at Roosevelt's Diner & Bar, a very accessible location from Outram Park MRT Station. If you manage to get the roadside parking space just outside the restaurant, you can skip the parking coupons! ;)

The Place:
Situated as part of Dorsett hotel, this is the place is known for their waffles and cheap drinks.

When we first arrived at the restaurant at close to 5pm, there weren't much people around, except a few who ordered just drinks.

Service:
This is one of the rare places which actually served water without asking. Thumbs up for this. The waiters were extremely helpful and seem to know their stuff well.

The Food:
We scanned the menu and ordered the following-

Candied Bacon Beef Burger ($20) - Look at the juicy bacon!

Candied Bacon Beef Burger ($20) - Look at the juicy bacon!

Candied Bacon Beef Burger ($20)
Their burgers are served in their in-house brioche burger bun that's baked fresh daily, with 180grams of juicy patty for the beef burgers, and double cheese fries.

The many layers of ingredients- pickles and the usual cheese, tomato and lettuce complement the patty very well. That being said, the patty was not well-marinated and could not hold itself well. The candied bacon was actually the star of the dish.

What is a candied bacon? As you may be thinking already, yes, it is actually bacon drenched in sugar syrup before deep frying it to get that sweet coating and crunch when you bite. Bacon is already sinful enough, with sugar? Double the sin! But trust me, it's all worth it.

We are definitely going to try this candied bacon the next time we make our home-made burgers!

Southern Fried Chicken ($18)

Southern Fried Chicken ($18)
Tasting somewhat like Popeye's Fried Chicken, including the 3 side dishes- salad, potatoes and corn.
Tasted tender, boneless, totally perfect for a first date dish. The skin is very cripsy and well marinated as well.

Churros Waffles ($12)

Churros Waffles ($12)
With cinnamon sugar, butter, and mocha sauce on the side.

As the mocha sauce was not sweet as we would have preferred for a desert, we actually drenched it in maple syrup, which was provided on the side. The waffles were a tad oily, but it was soft and airy. The whole combination was extremely tasty. It definitely kept up to its reputation online.

The HUGE vanilla ice cream in the middle totally made my day. I always had to 'ration' my ice cream whenever I have waffles with ice cream. Today, there was no need to, and in fact, the ice cream was the last to be polished off!

Verdict:

Service: 4/5

Total Score: 4/5

Candlenut Kitchen @Outram

Hidden in Dorsett hotel, this quaint place could be easily missed.

But behold the food, for these Peranakan food are top-notch. We brought our Peranakan mummy to this place and she was raving about it. Though the portions could be slightly small to share, don't worry, they have free-flow white rice to fill your tummies. The servers are quite friendly and prompt with requests as well.

Sambal Kacang Petai ($14)
Stir fried stinky petai beans w tamarind and chilli sambal, crispy shallots

Crispy Pork Belly ($16)
w mustard greens, sambal chincalok

Babi Pongteh ($14)
Tender pork belly braised in fragrant preserved soy beans gravy topped with chillis

Rendang ($24)
Dry aromatic coconut curry w kaffir lime leaves and roasted coconut
French duck breast, grilled and served pin

Yellow Coconut Curry of Crab ($24)
Blue swimmer crab meat, turmeric, galangal, kaffir lime leaf
Inspired by the classic prawn nanas dish

Banana Caramel Pudding ($9)
Steamed banana cake, caramelized banana, ginger crumble
w gula melaka ice cream

Curry Leaf with Soda

The Crispy Pork Belly ($16) with mustard greens, sambal chincalok is a must-try! The skin is really crispy, and the meat really tender. One of the best roasted meats we have savoured with such a price tag. Do ask for more sambal chincalok for they go really well with their fragrant rice.

Their Babi Pongteh ($14), tender pork belly braised in fragrant preserved soy beans gravy topped with chillis, is a sweeter version, but still tasty nonetheless. Again, the meat was braised really tender and flavorful.

While their Sambal Kacang Petai ($14), stir fried stinky petai beans w tamarind and chilli sambal, crispy shallots, is a pretty average dish, the portion is great for 4 persons to share with rice.

Rendang ($24), dry aromatic coconut curry w kaffir lime leaves and roasted coconut with French duck breast, grilled and served pink, is a unique dish, a great fusion between French and Peranakan. The duck meat took a bit more to chew, it was not as tasty as we'd expected, but the presentation and concept was really interesting.

Inspired by the classic prawn nanas dish, the Yellow Coconut Curry of Crab ($24) using blue swimmer crab meat, turmeric, galangal, kaffir lime leaf, is another sweet dish, the crab meat was generous and fresh. The yellow curry is an extremely great accompaniment to the rice.

Banana Caramel Pudding ($9), a steamed banana cake, caramelized banana, ginger crumble topped with gula melaka ice cream. Gula Melaka ice cream is like everywhere now, and this place does it quite well too. The main character, their steamed banana, is soft and moist. A perfect dessert to end our dinner!

They have also interesting drinks which you'd never have thought of mixing together. Curry Leaf with Soda, and many other varieties.

I'd definitely be back here with my Peranakan foodies!
